Hi there! I’m Kristyn, a Traditional Midwife and Healer, a clairvoyant specializing in Tarot reading and other forms of divination, and a rootworker in the Black-American Hoodoo tradition. I follow in the footsteps of many wise ancestors who came before me.
I began my quest to enrich my spirit at the tender age of 11. I explored the world of mythology, religion, and spirituality, embarking on a journey that led me to the nature-centered, indigenous, and traditional wisdom practiced by my ancestors. The result of these 30 years of study and practice is a somewhat eclectic appraoch to spirituality that is integrates itself into all aspects of everyday life.
My journey in the healing arts officially began in 2005 at Smile Herb Shop in College Park, MD, with their Introduction to Ayurveda program in the fall of 2005, and their Foundations in Herbalism course in the spring of 2006. Over the years, I have participated in many workshops and seminars, and been on countless “weed walks” with many wise teachers. In 2014 I enrolled in the two-year Grassroots Herbal Program through Wild Ginger Community Herbal Center (formerly Centro Ashé), in Bryans Road, MD.
I later went on to study under clinical herbalist Teresa Boardwine of Green Comfort Herbs in Castleton, VA, and experience that deepened my understanding of medicine making and writing personalized protocols formutilizing healing herbs.
In an effort to further deepen my knowledge and skill, I enrolled in the Alchemical Herbalism Program through The School of Evolutionary Herbalism, and am presently working toward its completion.
Additionally to my extensive education in the many facets of herbal healing, I have studied Reiki, Homeopathy, Aromatherapy, Acupressure, Intuitive Healing, Yoga, Crystal Healing, and Thai Body Work.
My education in all things birth began shortly before the birth of my first set of twins in 2011. In an effort to prepare for my own upcoming home birth, I signed up for a comprehensive doula training course through Birth Arts International. In early 2012, I briefly apprenticed with a local community doula and young student midwife before attending births as a doula officially in the summer of 2012. Feeling the need for more hands-on and in-person training, I continued my doula training in the fall of 2012 with ToLabor.
In the spring of 2016, I attended and completed training as a Midwife Assistant through Sacred Journey Birthing Services, where I also apprenticed for 16 months as a student midwife in 2020. In June of 2021, I completed my midwifery education through The Matrona’s Holistic Midwifery program. And, because it is my firm belief that we should never believe we are done with learning, I continued to delve into the magic and mystery of pregnancy and birth through Sophia’s Circle, led by Elder Traditional Midwife Dr. Lois Wilson. Additionally, I am trained in neonatal resuscitation, CPR, and BLS.
In my everyday life, I am the mother of 8 children, including 2 sets of fraternal twins. When I am not busy mothering my small army, I like to spend time in nature, making medicines from the herbs I cultivate and collect, crafting, and teaching my children the ways of the wild ones.
I am an activist and womanist fighting to make traditional birth and healing services accessible to marginalized groups ,who have the highest rates of poor maternal-fetal outcomes. I presently live in Silver Spring, Maryland.
